Goodbye STA, Hello Immortal Perfumes!

Sweet Tea Apothecary started out on Etsy in 2012. My first sale was to my Aunt. I didn't initially want to release Dead Writers Perfume because I thought everyone would think I'm weird (probably true). But thanks to your support, kind words written in the press, and overwhelming kindness from people across the globe, STA has grown into a full fledged business sending out more than 100 bottles of perfume and countless sample packs a month to 30 countries around the globe.

This remains a one woman operation (although my 3 year old now slaps on the Fragile stickers - now you know why they're so crooked) but I've increasingly thought about how I could improve my branding and professionalism. In this spirit, I've decided to move on from the name Sweet Tea Apothecary. Dead Writers, La Reine Antoinette, Lenore, and all the other fragrances that you've made your signature scent are not going anywhere. In fact, starting September 23 (Seattle launch party if you're in the PNW!) you'll be able to try out a whole new collection, Literary Lovers.

Thank you again for all of your support. I truly hope you like the new name and hope that you will help me spread the word. To show my appreciation, let the annual $1 sample sale commence! From now through September 7 all samples will be $1 down from $4. Stock up!

And check your inbox around September 23...you'll be the first to get Literary Lovers at a special price. Hope you all had a wonderful summer!

A Handmade Holiday Gift Guide

[embed]http://instagram.com/p/vzvWAhP-5Q/?modal=true[/embed]I feel that these days I begin every blog post with an apology for not having written in a hot minute. This post will continue that tradition. I'm sorry. It's been since August. I've missed you too. First things first for my regular customers: Sweet Tea Apothecary will be having a Cyber Monday sale. It will be the last sale of the year so it's a great time to stock up. You can get 30% off all bottles of perfume with code TDAY14 on Monday December 1. This offer applies to all bottles (not samples, solids, or candles). Secondly, on Cyber Monday I will also be debuting a SUPER limited number of solid perfume compacts seen in the lead picture. I only have five ovals and four round so it's first come first serve. Unlike the ones I used to sell these are just compacts for your purse or vanity, not jewelry. The last thing you should know is that when STA returns from a scheduled close from December 15-January 5...Victoria, Clara, and Maynard will no longer be in stock. This is to make room for new perfumes and colognes. You'll still be able to order them but they will probably become a seasonal fixture in the Spring and Summer and will no longer be included in sample packs.

Onward to the gift guide!

This has been the year of Craft Shows for me. I participated in a bunch in cities like Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. Here are some of my favorite vendors that I bought from, worked with, or talked to.

Best in Salon at the Seattle Fragrance Salon!!!

I'm so excited! I love participating in shows because I love meeting people and talking perfume. It's the easiest and best way to get feedback as you can tell a lot from a person's facial expressions after a whiff of perfume. I decided to participate in the annual Seattle Fragrance Salon put on by TasteTv for two reasons 1. because I was 9 months pregnant last year and couldn't participate and 2. sounded like a fun way to get my name out there with other perfumers. I'm so glad I did, STA was awarded Best in Salon, Most Unique, Best Aroma, and Best New Product. *Puffs up chest* Hooray! I'm energized and ready to start on new perfumes (so many ideas) and hit the craft show circuit this summer. Thanks everyone for patronizing my shop! taste awards 2014

Naturals vs Synthetics?

One of the biggest questions I receive as a perfumer is about whether I use synthetics. Yes, I do, I am unashamed to admit. It is frustrating when people come at me as though I'm a terrible person for this. Yes, some people have very sensitive skin so synthetics are bad for them, but I'm willing to bet those same people would also have issues with various essential oils. Natural is always better right? WRONG.

I have tried to explain this multiple times, but this quote from a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle says it better than I've been able to articulate:

"Industry insider Carol Maa, a classically trained perfumer and CEO of luxury advisory group ofLeisure, weighs in: "Is natural really the same thing as safe?" she asks. And is natural always environmentally friendly? "Something as basic to perfumery as musk comes from endangered deer," which are poached relentlessly in China and Russia, says Maa. "That's not humane. Yet there are now amazing molecular re-creations of musk, the next generation of musk" - hyper-precise synthetics - "that are not only humane, but sustainable and biodegradable and let perfumers play on specific elements. Molecular geeks can geek out on citrusy musks, say, or smoky musks."

Hyper-precise faux ambergris without a touch of real whale? Bring on the atomizer."

Read the rest of the article here, it's got a nice shout out to my perfume group, Seattle Sniff.

**This is not to say that I don't like all natural perfumes, I do. I also don't have a problem with people who only want to use natural perfumes for various reasons of their own. I just don't like it when people are uninformed and mistakenly believe that all naturals are always inherently safer or better. It kind of reminds me of the whole all natural childbirth vs medicated vs csection. IT'S ALL NATURAL DAMMIT. /rant**

I'm closing shop on Tuesday, December 10 at 10am. Help me get rid of these before then! Click here for the sale.
